Changing the culture of youth sports: The #socialortho tweetchat

On June 5, 2013, Ann Wendel and I hosted our latest #socialortho tweetchat. This month we discussed the current culture of youth sports and ways to make a positive impact.

TwitterFor those of you unfamiliar with tweetchats, people answer questions posed by the moderator and comment on other tweets using the hashtag specified – in this case #socialortho. It often starts slowly, but it can become difficult to follow when many people get involved and respond to many different questions and comments. This month’s chat was especially lively with tweets from great minds all over the world!

If you enjoy fast-paced discussions about important sports medicine, healthcare, and social media topics, join us for future #socialortho tweetchats. We usually hold these chats on the first Wednesday of each month. The next #socialortho tweetchat will take place on Wednesday, July 3 at 9 PM ET.

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
Welcome to #socialortho – topic tonight is making a positive impact in kids’ sports. We have all seen things getting out of hand-let’s help

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@PranaPT I’m excited for this topic. I might be in & out though. Trying to cover a pro soccer game in torrential rain too. #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
We want to hear your stories of what you see on the field,in the training room or clinic. Who’s driving the furious pace? #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@DrDavidGeier Excuses, excuses…HAHA – David is going to do his best tonight in between injury care! #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
RT @mnhopper1s: @PranaPT @DrDavidGeier hopefully he doesn’t have to work too hard! #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
#socialortho checking in from Tampa, FL tonight where we’re going to get wet very soon!

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
Reminder to everyone as you’re checking in and saying hello, use the hashtag #socialortho in every tweet.

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@mnhopper1s @PranaPT I decided to do this inside. @BWW_ATC is getting soaked, I’m sure. But we’ve already worked a lot tonight #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@mnhopper1s Hi Mike! Rain headed your way? #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@mnhopper1s What’s going on in Tampa? #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@DrDavidGeier @mnhopper1s @BWW_ATC Awww, poor Bobby! #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@PranaPT #socialortho Tropical Storm Andrea sitting right on top of us.

Young tennis playerSteve Salinas ‏@stevenmsalinas
In this age of parents pushing sport specialization starting at a young age. Overuse injuries, esp in baseball concern me #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@mnhopper1s What are you doing in Florida, Mike? That’s not where you live, is it? #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@DrDavidGeier #socialortho attending week-long class with @USFGradAT and learning from some great people in healthcare this week!

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@stevenmsalinas Hi Steve! That’s part of my concern too. #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
#socialortho I see youth sports injuries all the time, like many of you. I often hear parents blame the coaches and vice versa.

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@DrDavidGeier #socialortho None of the parents on my son’s travel baseball team are pushing – it’s all decided by the league. We fight it.

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@stevenmsalinas agreed – this year coaching baseball I’ve seen our top pitcher throw 100+ then play day after at SS. #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@DrDavidGeier they both carry the weight of the issue. WAY TOO MUCH playing going on in most sports.. #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@stevenmsalinas That’s so true. The single-sport specialization leads to the overuse injuries #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@MarkyKev I watched a 12 yr old throw >85 in the 1st game of the season (other team). Had to restrain myself! #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@stevenmsalinas When did this push to pick 1 sport so early start? I’m not that old, & I played 4 different sports until age 12 #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@DrDavidGeier @stevenmsalinas also those who try to play 2 sports at same time.. #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
#socialortho So, Q1 as we are checking in is: what have been your experiences w this issue? Does it come from leagues? Coaches? Parents?

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@PranaPT A1: all of the above. #socialortho Push for “college scholarships.” It’s all about the money!

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@mnhopper1s @stevenmsalinas True. 2 sports at same time. Or 2 teams at the same time. I see the 2 team problem in baseball here #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@DrDavidGeier #socialortho Agreed. I had soccer/volleyball players doing both this spring. Playing upwards of 20 games/week!

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@DrDavidGeier Since 2000:has been 5fold increase in # of serious shoulder/elbow injuries in youth baseball/softball players #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@ptbise @stevenmsalinas Increased sports exposure on TV and increasing money in sports had to play some role in it #socialortho

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@PranaPT wow! I’m only a volunteer coach for the HS (1st yr)- coaches are old school and don’t take in2 consideration that much #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@DrDavidGeier This stat is from the STOP Sports Injuries website #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
MT @AlpineAthlete: @PranaPT
Teens / Tweens don’t realize pros sleep 10 hours work out, then nap for 2! #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
RT @ptbise: @DrDavidGeier Was a 2 sport athlete in college but 2nd sport frowned upon by coaches. #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@PranaPT @SportsSafety is a great resource for stats, injury prevention tips! #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
RT @ptbise: @DrDavidGeier @stevenmsalinas Hear that. But it was even there in there in late 80′s #socialortho

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
@DrDavidGeier @stevenmsalinas I think the real issue here is 2 sports which have the same physical requirements #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@ptbise @stevenmsalinas Agree. Athletes should at least pick sports that stress different body parts. #socialortho

Youth baseball batterAnn Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@ptbise @DrDavidGeier My son’s travel baseball team is required to play house league – no choice, no other travel team in area. #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
RT @AlpineAthlete: @mnhopper1s @DrDavidGeier @PranaPT back in ’99 I had a ski racer competing 60 days / season… #socialortho

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
@PranaPT The real question is do they need tha much play? #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@ptbise NO! Resounding NO! They are all playing too much. Humeral stress fx in 11 yo pitcher last season!!!!! #socialortho

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
@PranaPT @AlpineAthlete @mnhopper1s @DrDavidGeier It’s not competition though. What was practice schedule? That’s real stress. #socialortho

David Webb ‏@trainerwebby
#socialortho I officiated as well as seen youth sports as an AT. I mainly viewed a plethora of dads trying to relive (gain?) old glory.

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
So leading into Q2: What can we do about this? Where can we have the greatest impact? #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@AlpineAthlete @mnhopper1s @PranaPT What do the skiers do in the offseason? #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@trainerwebby I see this occasionally – sad… like @kmessina15 ‘s player whose dad refused stitches for his facial lac… #socialortho

Steve Salinas ‏@stevenmsalinas
Maybe athletes just getting better?2 compete requires year round.Explosion in MMAhigh school wrestlers now in BJJ in offseason #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@stevenmsalinas Possibly…but stats show that more injuries occurring…so, not really “better” as in stronger or healthier! #socialortho

Aaron Gray, M.D. ‏@MizzouSportsDoc
@PranaPT @DrDavidGeier travel coaches and tournaments are making money on all the games. They drive the business. #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@PranaPT @stevenmsalinas Some of increase in injuries is more kids playing. But skyrocketing overuse injuries is a real concern #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@MizzouSportsDoc Aaron, I agree.”Academies” popping up for off season training…private pitch coaching,hitting coaches #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
Another stat: Children ages 5 to 14 account for nearly 40 percent of all sports-related injuries treated in hospitals. #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
Kids need to PLAY their sport less and TRAIN for their sport more! #AT4ALL #socialortho

Aaron Gray, M.D. ‏@MizzouSportsDoc
@PranaPT recently had a 10 yo girl throwing 400 pitches per week in “offseason” with pitching coach #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@MizzouSportsDoc @PranaPT That’s a great point. We often ignore the tournaments and showcase events themselves as risks #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@mnhopper1s Agreed. The players are told to do 100 push ups a day-total fail. Poor form,wrong exercises…UGH! #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@PranaPT part of that has to deal with relationship between lack of medical supervision at the lower levels. Parents turn to ER #socialortho

Head injury in soccerAnn Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@mnhopper1s That’s a good point – most HS athletes have ATC,less trips to ER for things that can be handled in ATR #socialortho

David Webb ‏@trainerwebby
@mnhopper1s #socialortho agreed. Most youth coaches think they have the 96 Bulls or 27 Yanks. Play and dominate without teaching how to play

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
So back to Q2: What are we all doing about this? What can you share? #socialortho

Teddy McCann ‏@McCannSports
@PranaPT chair massage for parents=relaxed and sports massage for athletes=healthy #socialortho #sportsrub=reduce craziness in youth sports

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@PranaPT #socialortho cant say most (data still says <50%) but a lot more than youth sports..

Wellpepper ‏@Wellpepper
@mnhopper1s @PranaPT Is it also a question of educating parents? #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@trainerwebby @mnhopper1s And w/o proper training of functional strength,shoulder stability, use of hips, etc. #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@mnhopper1s @PranaPT Makes sense. Also young kids suffer fractures instead of soft tissue injuries, so might go to ER sooner #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@Wellpepper @PranaPT Absolutely! They need guidance as to what constitutes “emergency” and what can wait #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@Wellpepper @mnhopper1s Yes! Educating parents…but with the stranglehold the coaches/leagues have,it takes a mutiny! #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@MizzouSportsDoc @PranaPT I’m at a loss for words. Ridiculous, in my opinion #socialortho

Steve Salinas ‏@stevenmsalinas
@DrDavidGeier @pranapt Educate coaches/parents on early signs/symptoms of overuse injuries and consequences of ignoring them #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@Wellpepper @mnhopper1s A mutiny to change the practice, games, tournament, playing time, I mean! #socialortho

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
Every parent thinks theirs is the next pro. If your kid is that good then someone will find them #socialortho

Dr. Monique J Caruth ‏@mjcDPT
RT @ptbise: Every parent thinks theirs is the next pro. If your kid is that good then someone will find them #socialortho

jb humphrey ‏@PT_ATC_CSCS
#socialortho Coaches need to understand players weaknesses with drills that correlate well to sport demands. #injuryprevention

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@PranaPT Mutiny? You’re not a fan of conformity, are you?? #socialortho

Youth footballAnn Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@stevenmsalinas @DrDavidGeier So,maybe the best place to start is at the 8-12 yo range – educate athletes,coaches,parents… #socialortho

Kristi Messina ‏@kmessina15
@PranaPT @trainerwebby yes was very crazy … Didn’t care about risk of infection etc #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
#socialortho A2 Need to address youth injuries in blog posts, news articles, anyway to get word out. Look what media done w concussions!

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@DrDavidGeier Honey, that is not in my nature. #socialortho

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
@mnhopper1s Parents for the most part don’t read blogs. #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@PranaPT Me either. That’s why we work well together. #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@kmessina15 @PranaPT @trainerwebby I sent kid the other day for much smaller cut than you had! #socialortho Mom didn’t even look, just took

Aaron Gray, M.D. ‏@MizzouSportsDoc
I try to educate parents about pitch count recommendations when I see baseball/softball pitchers for arm pain. #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@mnhopper1s Excellent point Mike! So looking at concussion ed, who spearheaded that?Who pushed it?Where did the $ come from? #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@ptbise @mnhopper1s Chris – what do you think? How can we most effectively reach parents and coaches? #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
RT @DrDavidGeier: @PranaPT Me either. That’s why we work well together.

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@PranaPT @ptbise must have multi-prong approach. Blogs, articles, interviews, educational seminars/lectures, etc #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@ptbise @mnhopper1s Agree blogs might not reach most parents, but that plus mainstream media, talks to teams & more are a start #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@mnhopper1s @kmessina15 @trainerwebby I thought that kid’s lac needed stitches – it’s his FACE for crying out loud, Dad! #socialortho

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
@PranaPT @mnhopper1s As former coach need to start with orgs to get buy in. USA hockey mandates updates unsure of other orgs #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@MizzouSportsDoc Do you have a handout or a link you could share? #socialortho

Baseball pitcherAaron Gray, M.D. ‏@MizzouSportsDoc
I find that many parents are unaware that their kids are being overworked by coaches who they trusted their kids arms to. #socialortho

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@PranaPT @trainerwebby @mnhopper1s coming from a small HS, I found kids even lacked a basic strength foundation. (1/2) #socialortho

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@PranaPT @trainerwebby @mnhopper1s most think they can do nothing in off-season and come in-season and “work” on stuff (2/2) #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@ptbise I agree – if you don’t start w the org or league commissioner, you won’t get coach buy-in. #socialortho

Wellpepper ‏@Wellpepper
@PranaPT @stevenmsalinas @DrDavidGeier many youth coaches are volunteers/ parents with a passion for the game but no training #socialortho

Dr. David Geier ‏@DrDavidGeier
@PranaPT #socialortho Folks, I have to go. Our pro soccer game is almost over, & I have a ton of injured players to see. Thanks & have fun!

Kristi Messina ‏@kmessina15
@PranaPT I try hard to catch parents at different events etc & lots ask about prevention- so they are interested #socialortho

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
@PranaPT right but id advocate USA baseball or others need to begin to adopt no tolerance policies #socialortho

Aaron Gray, M.D. ‏@MizzouSportsDoc
@PranaPT I use the @SportsSafety sheets. They have great info on pitch counts and many more baseball safety tips. #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@Wellpepper That is also true – no real qualifications for coaching Little League, although I believe soccer does? #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@DrDavidGeier Have fun! #socialortho

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
@PranaPT @Wellpepper That’s a good point. Some organizations are looking for warm bodies. #socialortho

Brian Finch PT,CSCS ‏@AlpineAthlete
@ptbise @PranaPT @mnhopper1s @DrDavidGeier #socialortho
100 day season ; 60 races = 1 ACL rupture

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@ptbise I need to check into that… #socialortho

David Webb ‏@trainerwebby
#socialortho I am personally not a pitch count fan (long story) but a base foundation of function needs to exist before activity begins.

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@ptbise @PranaPT doesn’t little league have a pitch count policy for pitchers as well? #socialortho

Kristi Messina ‏@kmessina15
@PranaPT @mnhopper1s @trainerwebby exactly .. But come on he played football- so that cut must be nothing from bball

Kendra Gagnon ‏@KendraPedPT
@ptbise @PranaPT Joining late but following w/ great interest (as parent & #PediPT). Did you see this? #socialortho

Cheerleader pyramidMike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@kmessina15 mine was cheerleader. BC you know no injuries happen in cheerleading! #sarcasm #socialortho

Brian Finch PT,CSCS ‏@AlpineAthlete

2many travel to s hemisphere & cont same.

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@MarkyKev Yes.Although my son is a catcher-no one counts his throws back but me! I’m the one that tells coach to take him out #socialortho

Steve Salinas ‏@stevenmsalinas
Marketing opportunity for us? Have a booth at local weekend tournaments discussing dangers and answering questions #socialortho #ptbiz

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
@MarkyKev @PranaPT I think most do but don’t see commissioners out counting #socialortho

Kristi Messina ‏@kmessina15
@PranaPT @markykev what about softball? I would pitch 9 games in 3 days- my dad would complain but no changes #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@kmessina15 @PranaPT @markykev softball has got to change too #socialortho @MizzouSportsDoc many pitching way too much

David Skowronek ‏@Skow5
“@mnhopper1s: Kids need to PLAY their sport less and TRAIN for their sport more! #AT4ALL #socialortho” Amen @AWPSPORTS does that in Ft Wayne

Kristi Messina ‏@kmessina15
@MizzouSportsDoc yes I see that as well. Especially my middle school parents – never seem to be in the “know” #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@stevenmsalinas Yes-not to be marketing for patients (b/c most don’t live locally if at tourn…) but market for safety #socialortho

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@PranaPT I feel alot forget about C. I remember playing at 10y/o I would catch 3in & P 3in and vice versa; terrible for my arm #socialortho

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@kmessina15 @PranaPT are those days of softball pitchers being able to go everyday long and gone? (1/2) #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@MarkyKev @PranaPT #socialortho I did the same. Pitched most games. Prob lucky never had arm injuries..

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@MarkyKev He caught 6 games straight at tourn before I pulled him out. Ridiculous. #socialortho

Kristi Messina ‏@kmessina15
@PranaPT hey I have two broken nose kids – chose against surgery said it “builds character” wow #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@PranaPT @MarkyKev for his arm and his knees! #socialortho

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@kmessina15 @PranaPT I only ask b/c I saw in this year’s #WCWS Tenn’s P threw 180+ then came relief next day (2/2) #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@kmessina15 @PranaPT wow! Can understand refusing surgery, but wrong answer! #socialortho

Youth pitcher and dadAnn Wendel ‏@PranaPT
#socialortho So, 1 suggestion was having a booth at sports events to talk safety…any other ideas on how we can change this?

Kristi Messina ‏@kmessina15
@MarkyKev @pranapt yes! My shoulder sublux’s putting a shirt on. There has to be some sort of regulations #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@AlpineAthlete @DrDavidGeier @mnhopper1s #facepalm #socialortho

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@ptbise @PranaPT it’s unfortunate – but also not taking in acct the pos that the P plays after pitching – C, 3B, SS etc. #socialortho

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
@PranaPT Love this and maybe add instruction at inital information session for parents . #socialortho

Kendra Gagnon ‏@KendraPedPT
@PranaPT I think, at least for school sports, school-based PTs have an opportunity to educate coaches. #socialortho

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@mnhopper1s @PranaPT want to trade shoulders? :) #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@KendraPedPT @ptbise Hi Kendra! I’ll take a look at it! #socialortho

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
@MarkyKev @PranaPT Yep and what if they go to play for another league the next day? Parents have to be invested #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@KendraPedPT @PranaPT That is where it’s so important for HS to have athletic trainers! #socialortho #AT4ALL

Aaron Gray, M.D. ‏@MizzouSportsDoc
#socialortho Sports Med Providers need to talk to media about risks of overuse injuries in sports. We have influential voice if we use it.

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@PranaPT that’s crazy… most underrated position that requires alot out of the athlete #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@mnhopper1s Agree – HS need ATCs. Yet…we REALLY need to reach the 8-12 yo group before HS. Educate players/parents/coaches. #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@MarkyKev @PranaPT Have concerns about shoulders now though! R > L #socialortho I threw A LOT growing up..

Kendra Gagnon ‏@KendraPedPT
@PranaPT @ptbise I really like the “tips” Easy to remember/understand so easy to share with parents/coaches. #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@MizzouSportsDoc YES! We need to get the message out there. #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@PranaPT AD contacted me yesterday about incorporating junior high into some things this year. More concussion-related at first #socialortho

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@kmessina15 @PranaPT ouch! I know how that feels, I can’t reach behind my back without some sort of impingement feeling #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@mnhopper1s That’s a great idea! What if each HS had an outreach program to local middle schools? #socialortho

Battery athletic trainer on the fieldDavid Webb ‏@trainerwebby
@PranaPT @mnhopper1s the network I am in has ATs at MS level and two rec districts in the county. #socialortho

So we are having a tent at events & folks to answer questions!
Wom! #socialortho WOM rules

Kendra Gagnon ‏@KendraPedPT
@PranaPT @mnhopper1s Yes. School-based PT is often present in elem, but solely focused on dev disability…#socialortho

Kristi Messina ‏@kmessina15
@PranaPT @mnhopper1s when I worked as contract they would have booths and do that! #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@trainerwebby @mnhopper1s Seroiusly?!?! Where is this? #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@KendraPedPT Yes – and only for kids with an IEP… need to get PTs and ATCs in middle schools and Rec to provide education. #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
RT @AlpineAthlete: #socialortho
In ’99 I proposed that men were not ready for nat team @ 17-19 & encouraged college, this got me tossed

From Jr Olympic selection comm.
Now we see 26-30 yo making US Ski Team after college…

Kendra Gagnon ‏@KendraPedPT
@PranaPT @mnhopper1s Funding is barrier (school PTs are paid w/ Sp Ed $). But IMO school PT is well positioned to address this #socialortho

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@ptbise @PranaPT coaches, parents and players should be made more aware. #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@KendraPedPT @mnhopper1s Would these same PTs have the expertise in sports injuries to be valuable? (Honest question) #socialortho

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
Best idea of the night was booths at events for parent education #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
Good night! #socialortho Headed out for ice cream with @MichelleSujka :)

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@mnhopper1s @PranaPT if you’re pop time gunning it down to second is around 2s, I’ll take it haha #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@MarkyKev @PranaPT #socialortho idk what it would be now; was 1.9 in HS..

Kendra Gagnon ‏@KendraPedPT
@PranaPT Depends. I think most would/should have enough to work w/ coaches/teachers & make basic recs in early grades #socialortho

MK ‏@MarkyKev
@PranaPT @mnhopper1s I like that idea – would have been helpful for my playing days and opened another door for college major #socialortho

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
@PranaPT @APTAtweets Would be nice to see collaboration between @SPTSAPTA and the @APTASoP for guidelines #socialortho

Boy drinking waterAnn Wendel ‏@PranaPT
In a nutshell: It’s up to US to get out there-educate players, parents, coaches starting at the late elementary/middle school ages #socialortho

Kendra Gagnon ‏@KendraPedPT
@PranaPT @mnhopper1s It’s just that we are THERE already. Seems a wasted opportunity to NOT ed on fitness/wellness/health #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@KendraPedPT @mnhopper1s Yes, Kendra,agreed. Could they do it? With the way PT is parceled out in schools? Maybe be a resource? #socialortho

Kendra Gagnon ‏@KendraPedPT
@ptbise @PranaPT @APTAtweets @SPTSAPTA @APTASoP There is an RC on ped overuse injuries at #APTAHOD this year #aptarc23 #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@KendraPedPT @ptbise @APTAtweets @SPTSAPTA @APTASoP Good to know! Thanks, I’ll check that out too. #socialortho

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
@KendraPedPT @PranaPT @APTAtweets @SPTSAPTA @APTASoP Saw that but it doesn’t look like it has a lot of meat. #socialortho

Mike Hopper ‏@mnhopper1s
@KendraPedPT @PranaPT #socialortho must be local thing. Don’t know of any school PTs around here..

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
Ok, guys! Great conversation tonight! I’ll see if David can get a transcript up and we’ll post the link! #socialortho

Ann Wendel ‏@PranaPT
@mnhopper1s @KendraPedPT Most schools have a PT that comes in to work on education-related goals w kids. #socialortho

Kendra Gagnon ‏@KendraPedPT
@PranaPT @mnhopper1s Under the special education umbrella. My point is that we could/should be a resource, esp in early grades #socialortho

Kendra Gagnon ‏@KendraPedPT
@ptbise Not much meat, but #aptarc23 is to put a plan in place. That may be where the “meat” comes in #socialortho

Christopher Bise ‏@ptbise
@KendraPedPT Yep and I think it’s a great place to start #socialortho

Teddy McCann ‏@McCannSports
@AlpineAthlete @pranapt @ptbise how about presenting your message via ipad while parents get chair massage from @Social_Rub #socialortho
