Hello soccer fans! I’m so excited for the upcoming Charleston Battery season. It will be my fifth season as team physician. I know Michael Barr (physical therapist), Bobby Weisenberger (head athletic trainer), Dr. Peter Carek (primary-care sports medicine physician), Lindsey Clarke (athletic trainer and massage therapist), Stacy Renouf (sports nutritionist) and everyone with MUSC Sports Medicine is excited to once again serve as the Charleston Battery’s sports medicine provider.
Judging by the preseason physicals we did earlier this week, I think that fans will appreciate this group of players for their hard work and, hopefully, their success on and off the field. We kicked it off Saturday with the first round of the Carolina Challenge Cup. The Battery tied the Columbus Crew 2-2 after an equalizing penalty kick in the 89th minute. I can’t wait for the Battery to square off with Major League Soccer foes the Chicago Fire and DC United.
Once again, the Charleston Battery and I are teaming up to discuss sports medicine, soccer, and much more. In addition to blog posts, we plan to add video posts as well. Prior to each home game, I’ll share my thoughts on an injury common in soccer, training tips from a player, or any other topic you suggest. Maybe we can even show you what goes on in the training room to treat injuries or get players ready to play.
I want to hear from you! What do you want to see or read this year? Injury explanations? Interviews with players sharing tips or experiences? The Charleston Battery and I want to know!
