329. Ultra-processed foods associated with early death

Frequently consuming ultra-processed foods appears to be linked to an increase in the risk of early, preventable deaths.  In a new study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers in Brazil determined that about 57,000 deaths there were related to consumption of these foods. That number is likely much higher in the U.S. and other wealthy countries, as people here consume far more ultra-processed foods. According to the researchers, cutting back on these ready-to-eat foods, like prepackaged soups, frozen pizzas, potato chips, candy and sodas could prevent tens of thousands of premature deaths every year.
