There are a number of injuries that are more common in older patients. On the other hand, older adults can suffer injuries that high school and college-aged patients typically suffer. In this Ask Dr. Geier video, I address age as it pertains to a common sports injury – an torn ACL and ACL surgery.

Daryl in England asks:
I snapped my ACL about 7 years ago and had it reconstructed. I’ve snapped it again. I’m now 52. The consultant doesn’t seem to want re-do it. Is there an age limit they stop doing them? I’m still very active in sports.

Over 100,000 ACL reconstructions are performed each year in United States. A large percentage of these are in high school and college athletes and young adults. As the population increasingly stays active at an older age, more people in their forties and even fifties are having surgery to treat their torn ACL.

In this video, I discuss the factors that go into the decision-making process for ACL surgery, including the age of the patient.
