There are all sorts of injuries that make it difficult to put weight on your foot. Knee, thigh, hip and leg injuries can all make weightbearing difficult. What about foot or ankle injuries specifically? If you hurt your ankle or hurt your foot and you think to yourself, “I can’t put weight on my foot,” watch this Ask Dr. Geier video.

I can’t put weight on my foot. What should I do?

My most watched YouTube video is one titled, “Signs your foot or ankle injury is serious.” In it I share three signs of an injury for which it’s worthwhile to see a doctor. One of those signs is difficulty putting weight on your foot.

Even after a mild ankle sprain, it can be uncomfortable bearing weight. If you can’t put any weight down at all, and you can’t take any steps because of it, then seeing a doctor and maybe getting x-rays is a good idea. You could have an ankle fracture or a broken bone in your foot.

In this video, I discuss knowing if your trouble putting weight on your foot is serious. Then I explain when you might go to an emergency room or urgent care center as opposed to waiting and seeing an orthopedic surgeon in the next day or two.
