If active people cannot do the physical activities they love to do because of pain or a bone and joint injury, they often undergo surgery. How soon after that surgery can they return to those sports or exercise? In this Ask Dr. Geier video, I discuss golf after hip replacement surgery.

Wayne asks:

Realistically, after having full right-side hip replacement and recovering fairly quickly, when can I expect to return to playing golf?

There are several factors that influence the return to golf after hip replacement surgery. The patient must recover motion and strength enough to do it comfortably. Physical therapy can help restore motion and strength after surgery.

The patient might not be able to walk long distances, so the surgeon might suggest he ride in a golf cart instead of walking the course. And the patient might have to get used to the twisting motion, which might not feel normal for a while after the surgery.

In this video, I share my thoughts about the length of time after hip replacement surgery that many joint replacement surgeons allow their patients to play golf.
