A bulging disc in your neck or back is a condition in which the outer layer, or the annulus fibrosis, of one of the discs in the spine swells or expands. It is often felt to be a normal process that occurs with age.
Bulging discs can cause localized neck or back pain, but they often are present in people with no pain as well.
Signs and symptoms
Someone with pain from a bulging disc often complain of neck or back pain more than pain that shoots down the arm or leg. You often don’t have the numbness, tingling or weakness in the arm or leg that someone with a herniated disc might.
Treatment of a bulging disc
Fortunately, most patients with pain from a bulging disc improve without surgery. In this video, I discuss non-surgical treatment options, including activity modification, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and injections.
