While attention has been given to the harm COVID-19 has done to males – higher rates of death and serious illness from the virus – we haven’t focused much on what it does to females, especially adolescent girls. A survey of more than 1,200 fifth through twelfth grade girls found that 80 percent feel more lonely since the pandemic began. More than 50 percent are unsure or scared of the future. These findings emphasize that parents, teachers, and coaches should offer support to girls working through feelings of disconnect and isolation. Girls, too, should talk to their friends about what they’re feeling.
