Dogs might soon be able to help us fight the coronavirus pandemic. German researchers found that dogs trained to detect the coronavirus in saliva were able to discriminate between samples infected with the virus and non-infected samples with a 94% success rate.
Dogs have smell receptors 10,000 times more powerful and accurate than humans, which allows them to detect diseases like malaria, cancer and some viral infections. It’s possible we could see dogs used to help COVID-19 screening in public places like airports and sporting events.
