Job losses due to COVID-19 has cost many Americans their health insurance

More than 2 of every 5 workers who were furloughed or lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic or whose spouse lost their job, relied on that job for health insurance. Now many find themselves unable to find alternative coverage.

The findings come from a new report from the Commonwealth Fund, showing the highest rates of furloughs and layoffs were among Hispanic workers and workers with incomes of less than $50,000 per year.

Fortunately, many furloughed workers were able to maintain health coverage. But we will have to see if they regain their jobs or lose them permanently if the economy remains depressed, as it could play a large role in health care in this country in the coming months.
