A large percentage of Americans believe false claims about the COVID-19 vaccine

A newly released survey reveals that a large percentage of Americans believe false claims about the COVID-19 vaccine. Researchers at Harvard and other academic centers asked over 20,000 Americans about four false claims regarding the vaccine pervasive on social media. Those claims included:

  • “The COVID-19 vaccines will alter people’s DNA.”
  • “The COVID-19 vaccines contain microchips that track people.”
  • “The COVID-19 vaccines contain the lung tissue of aborted fetuses.”
  • “The COVID-19 vaccines can cause infertility, making it more difficult to get pregnant.”

While not one of these claims is true, less than half of respondents recognized that all four were false. At least one of every five adults believed at least one of these claims. Young adults, men and people with high socioeconomic status were the most likely to believe these false statements about the coronavirus vaccine.
