Despite being one of the highest risk professions, dentists have mostly avoided COVID-19. A study by the American Dental Association found that fewer than one percent of dentists nationwide were estimated to be COVID-19 positive as of June. Dentists and hygienists are close to patients, and the procedures often create aerosols that may contain viral particles. The steps taken by dental practices, such as wearing masks, goggles and face shields, appear to have done an admirable job of protecting these providers.
