It appears that the COVID-19 vaccine might be effective against the most common coronavirus variant. It was first discovered in Great Britain, and it has proven to spread from person-to-person more easily than other forms of the virus. In a study performed at the University of Texas, which has not yet gone through the peer review process, scientists found the variant virus could not enter human cells protected with antibodies from people who received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. While definitely good news, we will have to see if the vaccine protects against other variants as well.
