Media Biography
Dr. David Geier is a nationally renowned sports medicine expert, appearing in numerous national publications – including USA Today, The Washington Post, ABC News, CNN, and Women’s Health Magazine – and podcasts/videos as a source for sports-injury related information. As an athlete, his passion for sports influenced him to become an orthopaedic surgeon. After earning his fellowship in Sports Medicine in 2005, he returned to Charleston and created the MUSC Sports Medicine program, where his team of trainers, physical therapists, etc. is focused on providing treatment, prevention and wellness information for athletes of all ages and skill sets.
He has almost a decade of experience with professional and college athletes, serving as team/tournament physician for the Family Circle Cup, the Charleston Battery and Washington University. He also assisted in the orthopaedic care of the St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Rams, United States Women’s Soccer team and the Eagles USA Ruby national team.
This, combined with his daily interaction with patients, helped Dr. Geier discover a passion for providing accurate information about sports-related injuries. And there seems to be a need for solid, precise information; a recent study published in the July 2010 issue of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS) suggests that information provided online regarding sports injuries is incomplete or incorrect.
“I think there is a lot of confusion regarding sports injuries among the general public. People see the elite athletes who suffer injuries all the time, but frequently little information about what is really going on is available. Almost everyone is an athlete of some sort – whether it involves playing a formal sport or just engaging in recreational exercise. At some point, we have all endured various injuries and aches or pains. Yet most of the time, we rely on experiences of our friends, teammates, coaches, and trainers for advice. I think that one of my best qualities is my ability to diagnose and treat injuries from an experienced sports medicine surgeon’s background and explain these in a way that the general public can understand.”
Dr. Geier is available for media interviews. Email him at media@drdavidgeier.com.

Disclaimer
I often post information about injuries suffered by famous athletes. These posts are meant solely for informational purposes. I am not the physician taking care of the athlete. Therefore I have not examined the injury personally and do not know the results of x-rays, MRI’s, or other tests other than what is reported in the media. I am merely trying to explain an injury from an orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon’s background in order to educate the reader about the injury.
